So it was my birthday on Friday, and while I haven't decided for sure if I'm counting forward or backward this year, it was a nice day. The big kids were at school, the monkey went to play with friends, and just the two of us grownups went downtown to the Field Museum. Let me just say that this was a great idea, but would have been significantly more enjoyable if we didn't already have sore legs and feet from the busy week and house projects we've been doing. We ended up feeling a little younger than the above specimen, but only a little.
What we did see, and enjoy (without running at the pace the kids prefer) was a lot of fabulous things from all over the world. The taxidermy and skeletons on display are absolutely incredible, and it was neat to go into the evolution exhibit and see so many of the specimens from here: Fossil Butte National Monument in Wyoming. It was one of our few side stops on the big trip west last summer, and the kids and I really were amazed at the fossils and the scenery both. I thought I'd share a few and just put in a good word for the place, if anybody is heading that way. It's only 5 minutes off the road and a very nice stop. The kids had fun trying to figure out what things were, like this horse, almost exactly the size of our little dogs.
Most were pretty clearly identifiable, though; even without the signage. Unfortunately, the glare from the cases blotted out the bat and dragonfly fossil pictures.
This next one is definitely my favorite picture from the stop, though, and I think you'll know why.
Whether they're keeping me young or making me feel older than dirt, they're my favorite specimens!
