When we got him home from the hospital, it was still a pretty rocky ride for a while. Most of the rage was gone, but as the extraneous meds worked their way out of his system (one took 3 weeks to step-down safely) we saw his natural cheerfulness and exuberance for life and his capacity to love come back. It was a very touching time, and very difficult still in many ways. He was still volatile, and very insecure. We were working with a neuropsychologist to get a full profile done and a formal diagnosis of Asperger's Syndrome, and he went through all those tests as the meds were working their way out of his system. I am not sure now that those (very expensive) results are valid, he is so different. Asperger's, yes, but the subtests and skills? Not so sure.

As spring progressed, we really got used to being able to talk to him, have long conversations, and enjoy his company, in short to feel like a family again. He continued to attend the ED/BD program at school, with no mainstreaming except for special areas like PE and Art. There was one horrible day when someone hurt his feelings badly on the bus, and he could not deal with it appropriately, but in general he improved rapidly. One of the biggest differences we could see is that he immediately lost 15 pounds. Really, over 15 pounds in two and a half weeks. From this to this.My Caveman
